that will use most of your ram before it uses swap.

I just simply have gnome-panel running because it's configured the way I want it, but I wonder if there's a way to make xfce-panel use the config & layout files for all your icons & applets that gnome-panel has set.

not sure what you means, you can do icons just like gnome-panel.
for gnome-applets you need " xfce4-xfapplet-plugin " and just add it to the panel and select what gnome applet you want, i'm using the sensors-applet.
once you get rid of that gnome stuff things should drop down.
